When I first thought of watching Gundam I was really confused what to watch since there are so many shows, there so many sites on the internet suggesting how you watch it, and each one reflects the writers liking. So, I decided to watch it from the beginning, when it’s all got started, and the first Gundam series was Mobile Suit Gundam aired back in 1979.
In this review I’ll jump into the series itself and if it’s watchable or not, I won’t talk in-depth about the plot, I could summarize it, and each one has his own views.
’70s were Go Nagai decade, and when you mention the word mecha you’d think as aliens against humans piloting big robots to fight them back and protect earth, yes, that was the theme of Go Nagai’s anime and most of the others in that genre. But Gundam was for me more realistic sci-fi that could happen in the near future. It’s about a war between the people who lives on earth and the people who call themselves as Spacenoids; in that era people are living in space in orbiting colonies.

Mobile Suit Gundam has a great plot, a dramatic plot with a lot of action scenes and a love story involved too, and it emphasizes on showing the whole world how ugly wars can be, and how humans should live together peacefully. The drawing (animation) wasn’t that good of course, but for me it’s a classic that I enjoy watching, and the sound effects aren’t mastered well, but the story itself will get you through those.
Why should you watch it? If you really want to know about the One Year War and who was the first one to pilot Gundam, then you must watch it to know that it was Amuro Ray, and you’ll know who his most skilled rival is, and that’s Char Aznable, and Lalah Sune the girl that affects both lives of them for a long time to come. Bright Noa the White Base captain and a lot of other characters and most importantly is the vast Mobile Suit Units specially the RX-78-2 Gundam and Zaku II. All those will keep popping up in the followed anime series and OVAs so it’s a must to watch to comprehend the whole story.
